Imagine
Close your eyes, then begin to imagine and visualize:
If we lived in a sovereign Black community...
Copy of Otherwise is possible--Ashon Crawley.png

Where would this community be geographically located? Visualize its landscape.

Is it coastal, mountainous, agricultural, or urban?

Imagine a neighborhood street on a regular afternoon. What do see, hear, and smell? What are the sounds of children playing, music, and conversation?

What would it feel like to coexist in harmony? How would we resolve conflict or disagreements?

What community support programs would function to ensure the health and well-being of our community members?

How would we protect our community? Each other?

How does it feel to break the generational cycle of codependence with a system that thrives off exploiting us ?

What would the community leadership system consist of? What values would it reflect?

What would the physical layout/city planning of the community look like? What would the architecture reflect? How would we honor the land?

What does the freedom to unapologetically center your cultural feel like? How are the ancestors venerated in our community?

What would our schools teach? What knowledge would every child have access to?

What would it feel like to celebrate our inaugural celebration of sovereignty?

Visualize your ancestors living in a sovereign Black community like this one during their time. What lessons did they teach you about their ways of living and culture?

Imagine our farms, businesses, factories, etc. that drive its economy.

What would be our communities' major exports and sources of wealth?

How do we produce food in our sovereign communities? Imagine having dinner with your people and eating food from our own farms, markets, and grocery stores.

What would be our relationship with the rest of the United States? The UN?

What are our communities' relationships like with the global African Diaspora? Who are our allies and what are our foreign policy priorities?

What are the dreams and aspirations of the 1st generation born in our sovereign Black community? What becomes possible for them now that they only know sovereignty?
